A kitchen renovation is the single biggest improvement you can make to your home โ€” it's where your family gathers, where you cook and entertain, and where you start every morning. When the layout doesn't work, the cabinets are falling apart, or the countertops are stained beyond saving, everything feels harder than it should.

Floor & Bath Design has been renovating kitchens across Durham Region since 1989. We're not a franchise and we're not a cabinet retailer who subcontracts installation โ€” we're a design-build firm that handles every detail from the first measurement to the final walkthrough. Our team designs your kitchen, selects materials with you at our Ajax showroom, manages permits, and builds it with our own crew.

Two Paths to a New Kitchen

We offer two approaches to kitchen renovations, and we'll recommend whichever one genuinely fits your needs:

Custom Kitchen Renovations

Full creative control. Cabinetry built to your exact specifications โ€” unusual dimensions, integrated appliance panels, specialized storage solutions, any finish or door style. Cabinet boxes are 3/4" plywood with dovetail drawer joints, soft-close hinges, and full-extension slides rated to 100 lbs. Custom kitchens take 8โ€“12 weeks total, with 6โ€“8 weeks of cabinet manufacturing lead time. This is the right choice when you have non-standard dimensions, want specific configurations, or need something truly one-of-a-kind.

Pre-Fab Kitchen Installations

Our pre-fab kitchen program delivers a beautiful new kitchen in weeks, not months. Factory-built cabinets arrive in 1โ€“2 weeks and installation takes 5โ€“7 working days. The quality is comparable to custom โ€” plywood construction, solid wood doors, soft-close hardware โ€” at 30โ€“40% less cost. Pre-fab covers over 30 door styles and most standard layouts. It's ideal for homeowners who want excellent results without the custom timeline or price tag.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a kitchen renovation cost in Durham Region?
Kitchen renovations range from $15,000โ€“$28,000 for a pre-fab kitchen to $40,000โ€“$80,000+ for a full custom build. The biggest cost variable is cabinetry โ€” pre-fab delivers comparable quality at 30โ€“40% less than custom. We provide a detailed, line-item quote after measuring your space so you know exactly where every dollar goes.
How long does a kitchen renovation take?
Pre-fab kitchen installations take 2โ€“3 weeks from start to finish. Custom kitchen renovations take 8โ€“12 weeks, including 6โ€“8 weeks of cabinet manufacturing lead time. We set up a temporary kitchen in your home so you can still cook throughout the project.
What's the difference between pre-fab and custom kitchens?
Custom kitchens are built to your exact specifications โ€” any size, any configuration, any finish. Pre-fab kitchens use factory-built cabinets from high-quality manufacturers, arriving ready to install in 1โ€“2 weeks instead of 6โ€“8. Both use plywood construction and soft-close hardware. Pre-fab covers 90% of layouts at significantly lower cost. We recommend whichever genuinely fits your situation.
Do I need a permit for a kitchen renovation?
If your renovation involves plumbing relocation, electrical changes, or structural modifications (like removing a wall), yes โ€” a building permit is required. We handle the entire permit process on your behalf, including drawings and submissions to your municipality.
Can you remove a wall to create an open concept kitchen?
Yes โ€” open concept conversions are one of our specialties. If the wall is load-bearing, we install an engineered beam (LVL or steel) sized to safely span the opening. All structural modifications are designed to Ontario Building Code standards.
Do you help with design or just installation?
We're a full-service design-build firm. Our team includes an interior designer and an architectural specialist who create detailed designs with 3D renderings, material selections, and layout optimization. You'll visit our Ajax showroom to see and touch materials before committing.
