This Whitby main floor renovation completely transformed a dated and compartmentalized layout into a bright, open, and cohesive living space. The homeowners wanted better flow between the kitchen and TV room while maintaining a high level of customization and craftsmanship throughout the main floor. Our team at Floor and Bath Design approached this project with both structural precision and detailed design coordination to ensure every element worked together seamlessly.
The Challenge: Opening Up the Main Floor
The original layout featured a structural wall separating the kitchen from the TV room, creating visual and physical barriers. In addition, a bulkhead above the oven hood concealed an exposed pipe, and mismatched finishes between the flooring and stairs disrupted continuity. The goal was to open the space, create a flat ceiling, and deliver a clean, modern look without compromising structural integrity or functionality.
Our Design and Construction Approach
To achieve the open-concept vision, we removed the structural wall and installed a recessed beam, allowing for a flat ceiling across the entire main floor. This change dramatically improved sightlines and natural light flow between the kitchen and TV area. Engineered hardwood flooring was installed throughout the main floor, and the stair treads were custom stained to match perfectly, creating a unified transition between levels.
The kitchen was designed and built entirely custom, including cabinetry that discreetly hides the pipe above the oven hood within the cabinet structure. Quartz was used for both the countertops and backsplash, delivering a seamless, high-end finish that is durable and easy to maintain. A custom-built TV unit with integrated dimmable lighting strips adds both functionality and ambiance, tying the living space into the overall design.
The Finished Transformation
The completed renovation delivers a modern, open main floor that feels spacious yet intentional. Potlights were installed throughout the ceiling to enhance lighting control and highlight key areas without clutter. Every detail, from the engineered hardwood flooring to the concealed mechanical elements, was carefully considered to maintain a clean and polished look.
