This Whitby main floor renovation was designed to improve flow, elevate finishes, and create a more cohesive connection between the kitchen, dining room, and TV room. The homeowners wanted a space that felt open and modern while still maintaining warmth and durability for everyday living. By rethinking the layout and upgrading key structural and design elements, we transformed the main floor into a functional and visually striking space that better supports how the family uses their home.
Reworking the Layout for Better Flow
One of the biggest challenges on this project was the separation between the kitchen and the adjacent dining and TV room. The existing structural wall limited sightlines and made the main floor feel compartmentalized. As part of this Whitby main floor renovation, we created a large opening in the load-bearing wall to improve circulation and natural flow throughout the space.
This phase required obtaining the proper permits and working closely with a structural engineer to ensure everything was done safely and correctly. The result was well worth it – the new open connection allows light to travel more freely and makes the main floor feel significantly larger and more inviting. Flooring and Staircase Upgrades
To create continuity across the main level, we replaced the existing hardwood flooring with engineered hardwood. This choice provided enhanced durability while maintaining a high-end appearance that complements the overall design. The engineered hardwood runs seamlessly throughout the space, tying each room together.
The staircase was also upgraded to match the new flooring. We stained the stair treads and railing to coordinate with the engineered hardwood, creating a cohesive look from top to bottom. To add contrast and a modern edge, we installed black metal pickets, which bring visual interest and a clean architectural feel.
Custom Kitchen and Dining Built-Ins
The kitchen was fully redesigned with custom cabinetry tailored to both the homeowners’ storage needs and the new open layout. Every cabinet was designed in-house to ensure a perfect fit and a refined finish. Clean lines and thoughtful proportions help the kitchen feel balanced within the newly opened space.
To further unify the main floor, we designed a custom dining room built-in that matches the kitchen cabinetry exactly. This creates a seamless transition between spaces and reinforces a consistent design language throughout the home. These types of custom solutions are a hallmark of our custom kitchen design process and help ensure every renovation feels intentional and personalized.
A Cohesive Main Floor Transformation
This Whitby main floor renovation successfully blends structural improvements with detailed craftsmanship. From the engineered hardwood flooring and upgraded staircase to the open-concept layout and custom cabinetry, every decision was made to enhance flow, function, and long-term value. The end result is a main floor that feels open, connected, and tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle in Whitby.
