Your bathroom should be a space that works effortlessly โ€” not one where the grout is crumbling, the exhaust fan barely functions, and the 1990s fixtures remind you every morning that a renovation is overdue. Floor & Bath Design has been transforming bathrooms across Durham Region since 1989 โ€” ensuites, main bathrooms, powder rooms, basement baths, and accessibility upgrades.

Bathrooms are our original specialty. It's in our name. With 44 completed bathroom projects in our portfolio and six Best of Houzz awards, we've handled virtually every bathroom challenge Durham Region homes can present โ€” from cramped postwar bungalow bathrooms to spacious ensuite builds in new construction.

Bathroom Renovation Services

Ensuite Renovations

The ensuite is typically the most impactful bathroom renovation โ€” it's private, it's used daily, and it's where you can invest in features like heated floors, a freestanding tub, a large walk-in shower with frameless glass, or chromotherapy lighting. We design ensuites that balance luxury with daily function, ensuring storage, lighting, and ventilation are all considered alongside the aesthetics.

Main Bathroom Renovations

The family bathroom handles the most traffic and takes the most abuse. Our main bath renovations focus on durable, low-maintenance materials โ€” porcelain tile (not ceramic) on floors, larger-format tiles that reduce grout lines, quartz vanity tops that resist water and staining, and proper waterproofing at every wet point. Storage is prioritized: recessed medicine cabinets, vanity drawers instead of doors, and built-in shower niches.

Powder Room Upgrades

A powder room renovation is the quickest way to make an impression. With a smaller footprint, you can invest in statement materials โ€” dramatic tile, a vessel sink, a floating vanity, designer fixtures โ€” without the budget of a full bathroom. Most powder room renovations are completed in 2 weeks.

Tub-to-Shower Conversions

Removing an underused bathtub and replacing it with a walk-in shower opens up the space dramatically. We waterproof the entire area with Schluter KERDI membrane, build a custom tile shower base with linear drain, and install frameless glass enclosure. The result is a bathroom that feels twice the size.

Accessibility Upgrades

Curbless showers, grab bars, comfort-height toilets, lever faucets, wider doorways, and non-slip tile. We design accessible bathrooms that look modern and inviting โ€” not like a hospital. Whether you're planning ahead, aging in place, or addressing a current mobility need, we'll find solutions that work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a bathroom renovation cost?
A standard bathroom renovation in Durham Region typically costs $15,000โ€“$35,000 depending on size, materials, and scope. Powder room updates start around $8,000โ€“$12,000. Large ensuite renovations with custom tile, freestanding tub, and glass shower enclosure run $25,000โ€“$45,000+. We provide line-item quotes after measuring your space.
How long does a bathroom renovation take?
Most bathroom renovations take 3โ€“5 weeks from demolition to completion. Powder rooms can be done in 2 weeks. Larger ensuites with custom tilework, heated floors, or layout changes take 5โ€“7 weeks. We provide a detailed timeline before work begins.
Can you convert my bathtub to a walk-in shower?
Yes โ€” tub-to-shower conversions are one of our most requested projects. We remove the existing tub, waterproof the entire area with Schluter KERDI membrane, install a custom tile shower base (or prefabricated pan), and add frameless glass enclosure. The result is more usable space and a modern, open feel.
Do I need a permit for a bathroom renovation?
If you're relocating plumbing, adding new fixtures, or making electrical changes, a permit is required. Cosmetic updates (tile, vanity swap, paint) don't need one. We handle all permit applications on your behalf.
What waterproofing system do you use?
We use Schluter Systems for all shower and wet area waterproofing โ€” KERDI membrane on walls, DITRA on floors, and KERDI-BAND at seams and corners. This is the industry gold standard for preventing moisture damage behind tile. We're experienced Schluter installers.
Can you make my bathroom more accessible?
Yes. We install curbless showers, grab bars, comfort-height toilets, wider doorways, and non-slip tile. Whether you're planning ahead or addressing a current need, we design accessible bathrooms that look beautiful โ€” not institutional.
